While some dread winter, others love it. However, for babies, it is mostly harsh. Cold weather, dry air and seasonal infections make infants particularly vulnerable during this time. Since babies cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently as adults, they need extra care and attention throughout the winter months.
“Most winter complications in infants arise from exposure to cold, poor hygiene and delayed response to early symptoms,” said Dr Farjana Sharmin Panna, a medical officer of Paediatrics at Mymensingh Medical College. “Winter-related illnesses in babies are quite common but largely preventable with proper care and awareness,” she added.
Keep your baby warm
Maintaining the right body temperature of the baby is crucial. They should be dressed in soft, layered clothing that keeps them warm without restricting movement. Cotton inner layers with a warm outer layer work best.
Over-bundling should be avoided as well, as it may cause excessive sweating, which can increase the risk of catching a cold. “Do not bring your baby outside in the cold unless it is necessary,” said Dr Farjana.
She also advises parents to check the baby’s neck or chest rather than hands or feet to assess warmth. “Cold hands and feet are normal in winter. What matters is whether the baby’s core body feels comfortable,” she added.
Protect delicate skin from dryness
Winter air is often dry, which can cause babies’ skin to become rough, itchy and cracked. Using a mild, fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing helps lock in moisture. “Babies should bathe with lukewarm water, and the bathing time should be kept short to prevent excessive drying of the skin,” said the paediatrician.
Frequent use of harsh soaps should be avoided as well. Instead, parents should choose gentle, baby-friendly cleansers that do not strip away natural oils.
Breastfeeding and nutrition
Breastfeeding remains one of the strongest protective measures against winter illnesses. Breast milk and the antibodies that it contains fight infections such as colds and various respiratory problems, which are more common during this season.
Babies who have started complementary feeding should be treated with warm and freshly prepared foods. Dr Farjana also emphasised hygiene while preparing babies’ food. Along with it, a diet rich in Vitamin C and healthy fats is recommended. Hydration plays an important role, too.
Be aware of health issues
Runny nose, mild cough and sneezing are common during winter. But parents should remain vigilant. If a baby shows signs of fast breathing, chest indrawing, persistent coughing or fever, parents should seek medical care immediately. Pneumonia and bronchiolitis are serious winter risks for infants.
Keeping babies away from crowded places and sick individuals is also equally important. Ensuring proper ventilation at home without exposing the baby to cold drafts also helps.
Sunlight and hygiene are the key
Sunlight plays a very important role in our health during winter. Allowing babies to get some morning sun helps with vitamin D synthesis and overall immunity.
At the same time, maintaining the hygiene of both the caregiver and the baby is essential to prevent winter diseases. “Simple habits like washing hands before handling the baby and keeping feeding utensils clean can prevent many winter illnesses,” noted Dr Farjana.
Timely vaccination and parental awareness
Winter is not a time to delay vaccinations. Parents should ensure that their baby’s immunisation schedule is up to date. After all, vaccines play a vital role in protecting infants from severe infections that can become life-threatening in colder months.
While winter brings its share of concerns for parents, attentive daily care can make a significant difference in babies’ well-being. Simple measures such as proper clothing, hygiene and nutrition can go a long way in keeping babies safe and well during the colder months.
With proper care and timely medical advice, parents can ensure that even winter remains a season of comfort and safety for their little ones.
