The University Teachers’ Network has called for an investigation into alleged “unauthorised” and “criminal” activities involving Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Rucsu) General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar and leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir, demanding punishment for those found responsible.
In a statement issued to the media on Wednesday, the organisation also demanded an end to what it described as attempts to take the law into one’s own hands on the Rajshahi University campus.
The Teachers’ Network alleged that Rucsu GS Salahuddin Ammar and Shibir leaders assaulted three students on 27 July.
It said two of the students, who were allegedly assaulted, Mohammad Anas, a student of the History Department from the 2017-18 academic session, and Mahmudul Hasan, a student of the Sanskrit Department from the 2021-22 session – were later arrested in an anti-terrorism case and sent to jail.
The organisation said allegations of assaults at different locations, including the proctor’s office, Rucsu building and central library, as well as claims that an injured student was assaulted again after being taken out of an ambulance, had raised serious concerns over campus security and the academic environment.
According to the statement, the responsibility for investigating allegations and taking action against offenders lies with the university administration and law enforcement agencies, not any student organisation or leader.
The Teachers’ Network alleged that students were being targeted and subjected to “mob justice” based on their political identities.
The organisation further alleged that Salahuddin Ammar and his associates have been involved in activities beyond their authority since being elected after the July 2024 uprising.
Citing past incidents, the statement mentioned allegations including locking administrative offices, intimidating teachers, conducting anti-drug drives while carrying sticks, removing banners, and allegedly harassing university officials during different movements.
The Teachers’ Network said any action against teachers, officials, employees or students accused of wrongdoing should be taken through proper institutional and legal processes.
It alleged that repeated instances of individuals taking the law into their own hands by Rucsu and Shibir activists had contributed to instability on campus.
Describing the 27 July incident as a troubling example of the use of force, the organisation urged the university administration to conduct a fair investigation and take action against those responsible in accordance with university rules and the law.
