Dhaka University professor Zeenat Huda, acting convener of the university’s Blue Panel, has been suspended following allegations over her role during the July uprising and complaints raised by students.
The university Syndicate, its highest policy-making body, took the decision at a meeting on Wednesday night, Professor Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, pro-vice-chancellor (administration), confirmed.
He said the university had formed an investigation committee to examine allegations concerning Zeenat’s alleged role against the July mass uprising.
“The investigation committee submitted its full report to the Syndicate on Wednesday. Based on its recommendations, she has been temporarily suspended. It has also been decided that a tribunal will be formed,” he told TIMES.
Zeenat Huda, however, rejected the allegations against her.
She told the media that none of the six allegations brought against her had been proven.
“Not a single one of the six allegations against me has been proved. All six allegations have completely failed,” she said.
Zeenat alleged that the decision was aimed at taking control of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association.
She claimed that members of the White Panel wanted to control positions in the association and alleged that she had been removed as chairperson of the Department of Sociology through what she called a “meticulous design”.
She further alleged that the move was intended to create opportunities for less-qualified candidates in teacher recruitment in the department.
Zeenat said she had protested the decision to the university administration and was considering pursuing legal action.
Professor Zeenat Huda is currently serving as general secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association.
She previously served as provost of Rokeya Hall and chairperson of the Department of Sociology. She was removed from the chairperson’s post following the July uprising.
She also served as an elected member of the Dhaka University Senate.
