Dengue cases continue to rise in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur, with children as well as young people making up a significant number of those infected.

While many patients have been admitted to hospital, others are receiving treatment at home.

The Shibchar Upazila Health Complex has been seeing fever patients almost every day for dengue tests, with the number of positive cases increasing over the past two months.

A total of 114 dengue patients received treatment at the health complex in August and September.

Most recovered and returned home, while some were referred elsewhere for advanced treatment.

Aklima Begum, a relative of a dengue patient, said the disease was detected after the patient developed a fever.

“After the dengue test came back positive, we admitted the patient to the hospital. They have been receiving treatment for four days and are still very weak,” she said.

She also complained about the hospital environment, saying, “The hospital is very dirty and the quality of service is not very good.”

Julekha, another patient’s relative, said the patient had been admitted for five days and was gradually improving.

“The platelet count is increasing. If the patient improves further over the next one or two days, we will take them home,” she said.

Children and elderly people suffering from seasonal fever have also been seeking treatment at the hospital’s emergency department.

Many fever patients have been visiting in recent days.

Dr Md Ibrahim Mia, resident medical officer at Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, said dengue cases had increased over the past two months and could rise further this month.

“Dengue patients have increased over the past two months. The number may rise further this month, after which we expect it to start declining. We are trying to provide patients with the best possible care within our capacity,” he said.

He also said the number of children suffering from measles was significant alongside the dengue cases.

“However, patients are recovering and returning home after receiving treatment here,” he said.
