Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) has permanently expelled 11 individuals, including three teachers, over the killing of student Abu Sayeed during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The decision was taken during the university’s 123rd Syndicate meeting held on Wednesday.
Professor Md Ferdous Rahman, syndicate member secretary and BRUR registrar (additional charge), confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.
The three permanently expelled faculty members are Mashiur Rahman, former associate professor of the Department of Mathematics; Asaduzzaman Mondal, associate professor of the Department of Public Administration; and Shariful Islam, associate professor of the Department of Political Science and former proctor.
The expelled administrative officers and staff members are Mahabubar Rahman alias Babu, office assistant-cum-computer operator; Rafiual Hasan Rasel, former assistant registrar; Hafizur Rahman alias Tufan, assistant registrar; Md Moniruzzaman Palash, section officer; Mohammad Nurunnabi Mondal, MLSS; Nur Alam Mia, security guard; and A K M Amir Hossain, MLSS.
Commenting on the executive decision, BRUR Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Showkat Ali said the university received a copy of the International Crimes Tribunal order concerning those involved in the killing two days prior.
He noted that following receipt of the order, the matter was presented before Syndicate, which decided on permanent expulsions to honour martyred Abu Sayeed and implement his dream.
Earlier, International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced the accused in the Abu Sayeed murder case to various terms of rigorous and simple imprisonment. A three-member judicial panel chaired by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury pronounced the verdict on 9 April.
On 16 July 2024, Abu Sayeed, a student of 12th batch of the Department of English at BRUR, was shot dead by police during the quota reform movement.
