Four higher education institutions from Bangladesh – three private universities and one public university – have secured places among the world’s top 1,000 in Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.

A total of 35 Bangladeshi universities featured in this year’s edition published on Wednesday on the UK-based education magazine’s official website, with 25 securing main rank positions and 10 listed without ranks.

Amongst the 25 ranked Bangladeshi institutions, the top 10 comprise five public and five private universities.

The global evaluation assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries using multiple performance indicators spanning five core areas – teaching quality (learning environment), research environment, research excellence, industry engagement, and international outlook.

The evaluation framework also incorporated key metrics including teaching quality, student-teacher ratio, research quality, citations, and international students.

Jointly leading the nation in 801–1,000 rank bracket are American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), Daffodil International University (DIU), Jahangirnagar University (JU), and North South University (NSU).

Breakdown of other rank bands

In 1001–1,200 rank band, eight Bangladeshi institutions were listed – Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), BRAC University (BRAC), Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT), Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), Dhaka University (DU), and Rajshahi University (RU).

Four universities were listed jointly in alphabetical order in 1201–1,400 rank category – Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), and United International University (UIU).

Seven institutions were positioned alphabetically in 1401–1,600 category – Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC), Khulna University (KU), Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), and Chittagong University (CU).

East West University (EWU) and Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) were placed in 1801–2,000 range.

Unranked participating institutions

Additionally, 10 Bangladeshi universities participated in the evaluation process but did not secure a rank position as they failed to meet the primary criteria required for main ranking – Asian University for Women (AUW), Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), Dhaka International University (DIU), Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), State University of Bangladesh (SUB), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Uttara University, Varendra University, and World University of Bangladesh (WUB).
