International Islamic University Chattogram (IIUC) has secured fourth place among Bangladeshi universities in the World University Rankings published by the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE).

The university disclosed the information in a press release issued by Mostaque Khandokar, senior assistant director of IIUC’s Public Relations Department.

According to the release, 25 Bangladeshi universities were included in this year’s rankings, with IIUC ranking fourth among both public and private universities in the country.

A total of 2,297 universities from 118 countries were assessed based on a range of indicators, including teaching quality, the research environment and research quality, student-to-faculty ratio, research-paper citations and the number of international students.

IIUC Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Ali Azadi said the university’s inclusion in an international ranking was an important milestone in its academic development.

He said initiatives were taken after he assumed office to secure IIUC’s inclusion in the Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings.

As part of the initiative, Dr Abu Huraira Muhammad Idban Alamzadeh, who holds honours, master’s and PhD degrees from the United States, was appointed to oversee the necessary activities for the university’s participation in the rankings.

Later, a ranking committee was formed under the vice-chancellor’s leadership to streamline and strengthen the process.

Professor Dr Mohammad Nazim Uddin served as the committee’s convener, while Dr Abu Huraira Muhammad Idban Alamzadeh, Dr Md Jahangir Alam and Engineer Md Mahi Uddin served as members.

University authorities said the committee completed the application process for participation in the THE and QS World University Rankings within the stipulated timeframe, providing the required data and fulfilling the relevant requirements.

Professor Azadi attributed the achievement to the collective efforts of the university’s researchers, faculty members, officials, employees and other stakeholders.

He said the recognition marked not the conclusion of IIUC’s journey but the beginning of a new chapter.

The university’s next objective, he said, is to strengthen its position in the global academic arena through quality education, international-standard research, global collaboration and continued institutional development.
