Four new subjects will be introduced in the curricula of class-IV and VI from the 2027 academic year, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Tuesday.

He made the announcement while speaking at the inauguration of the 53rd National Summer Sports Competition at Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla on Tuesday.

“For class-IV, two new subjects covering sports, culture and moral values will be added to the 2027 curriculum. For class-VI, we are introducing two subjects focusing on joyful learning and technical education,” the minister said.

“We want to build a generation capable of truly leading Bangladesh in the future,” he added.

The minister also said the government is working to revise the curriculum for all classes and introduce a new curriculum from the 2028 academic year.

The National Summer Sports Competition began nationwide on 26 August. Students aged below 17 from classes-VI to X of schools, madrasas and technical education institutions are participating in the competition.

The four disciplines are handball, kabaddi, chess and swimming.

Around 28,000 institutions are taking part.  About 14 lakh students participated at the upazila level, while 47,840 competed at the district level, 5,888 at the sub-regional level and 828 at the regional level. A total of 368 students are competing at the national level.

The Bangladesh National School, Madrasa and Technical Education Sports Association is organising the competition, with the Physical Education Division of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education and the Cumilla Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education managing it.

The theme of the competition is “We will build the country through sporting excellence, Bangladesh first.”

Prof Syed Aktaruzzaman, chairman of the Dhaka Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, said they had accompanied the minister to Cumilla mainly to attend the sports event.

Prof Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, chaired the programme.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher, Prime Minister’s Adviser and Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin, and the director generals of the Directorate of Madrasa Education, Directorate of Technical Education and Directorate of Primary Education were also present.
