International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) has been placed joint second among universities in Bangladesh in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, with the university ranked in the 1001–1200 band globally.
The UK-based higher education publication released the rankings on Wednesday, 30 September, after assessing 2,297 universities from 118 countries. IUBAT said in a press release that seven other Bangladeshi universities shared the same joint second position. Independent reporting on the newly released rankings also places IUBAT in Bangladesh’s second ranking band and 1001–1200 globally.
The other institutions in the group are Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), BRAC University, Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), the University of Dhaka (DU) and the University of Rajshahi (RU).
THE assesses universities across five core areas: teaching, research environment, research quality including citations, international outlook and industry engagement. The evaluation also considers indicators including the student-to-staff ratio and the proportion of international students.
IUBAT said the ranking reflected its progress in academic quality, research activity and global engagement, with its focus on applied education, international collaboration, research and community engagement contributing to its performance.
IUBAT Treasurer Professor Selina Nargis said the ranking recognised the collective work of the university’s faculty, students, staff and alumni.
“Being ranked joint second in Bangladesh in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings is a recognition of the tireless hard work and dedication of every member of the IUBAT family,” she said.
Nargis said the university had prioritised quality education, applied research and international collaboration since its establishment as Bangladesh’s first private university.
“This global recognition shows that we are on the right path,” she said. “In the coming days, we will continue working to expand our research, strengthen our links with industry, and prepare our students to be globally competent.”
She said IUBAT’s goal was to reach greater heights as a world-class institution.
The university authorities thanked faculty members, students, staff, alumni and others involved in the achievement and reaffirmed their commitment to academic excellence, innovation and developing a world-class institution.
IUBAT was founded in 1991 by academic M Alimullah Miyan as Bangladesh’s first private, or non-government, university, according to the university’s official history.
Located on a green campus in Uttara, Dhaka, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in business administration, agriculture, engineering, computer science, nursing and other disciplines. Its stated mission is to produce skilled, ethical and globally competent graduates.
