Notorious terrorist Mobarak Hossain, alias David Emon, is suspected of possessing multiple domestic and foreign passports, which police believe he used to travel regularly between Bangladesh and India.
Emon was arrested in Jashore while attempting to flee back across the border, just four days after entering the country.
The arrest took place at approximately 3am on Tuesday during a police checkpoint operation in the Jhumjhumpur area of Jashore Sadar Upazila. On Wednesday morning, Jashore police handed Emon and three of his associates over to the Chattogram District Police.
Nazimul Haque, additional deputy inspector general (DIG) of Chattogram Range, stated that Emon had entered Bangladesh through the Jashore border four days prior. Upon learning of police operations, he attempted to retreat to India but was apprehended before he could cross.
“Police have information that Emon travelled regularly between India and Bangladesh and may hold multiple domestic and foreign passports,” DIG Huq said, adding that further details are expected to emerge during his interrogation.
According to police sources, David Emon had been residing in India with another top terrorist from Chattogram, Sajjad Ali, alias Baro Sajjad. In a related operation on Tuesday night, police raided a house in Senbagh, Noakhali, to arrest an associate of the gang, Md Raihan.
However, Chattogram Superintendent of Police (SP) Masud Alam confirmed that Raihan managed to escape by scaling a wall just before officers arrived. Efforts to apprehend him are ongoing.
