A court in Chattogram on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for hacking his mother to death with a sharp weapon in the port city’s Bandar area in 2016.

The convict, Sumit Chowdhury alias Bibhu, was also fined Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to serve six additional months of simple imprisonment.

Judge Md Tajul Islam of the Chattogram Additional Metropolitan 5th Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict.

Sumit is the son of Sukhmoy Chowdhury of Madhu Chowdhury Bari in the Amilais area under Satkania upazila.

According to case documents, the victim, Kumkum Chowdhury, was hacked and her throat was slit with a sharp cleaver (da) between 12pm and 12:30pm on 17 September 2016, inside a third-floor apartment at “Sustain Tower” in Gosaildanga under Bandar Police Station.

On the day of the incident, the victim’s elder son, Somnath Chowdhury alias Sujon, returned home and knocked on the door repeatedly. When Sumit eventually opened the door, Somnath found their mother lying on a bed with her throat slit, while Sumit had bleeding injuries on his neck.

Sumit confessed to his brother on the spot that he had murdered their mother and inflicted self-harm. He was subsequently rescued and admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Following the incident, a murder case was filed, and formal charges were framed against Sumit under Section 302 of the Penal Code on 23 July 2017.

Court Bench Assistant SM Kawsar Sagar confirmed that the court handed down the sentence after the prosecution proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt through the testimonies of 11 witnesses and physical evidence.
