A case has been filed against Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman at the Airport Police Station on charges of creating chaos, obstructing government duties, and assault following a dispute over luggage and trolley shortages at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The case was lodged on Friday by Airport Security Officer Md Shahriar Alam Sojib following the incident on Thursday.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), passengers on a flight arriving from Madinah (BG-338) became agitated due to delays in receiving luggage caused by heavy passenger pressure.
When the airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, arrived at the scene to control the situation, Akhtaruzzaman hurled abusive language at him, and threatened physical assault.
He also made obscene comments regarding the civil aviation minister.
Further, the FIR states that when the accused’s companions began recording video in a restricted Key Point Installation (KPI) area, Security Supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin intervened.
Angered by this, Akhtaruzzaman hurled abusive language at him and physically assaulted him.
In addition, he threw away bottles of water belonging to general passengers and displayed aggressive behaviour towards a Biman Bangladesh Airlines representative.
Police have registered the case under multiple sections of the Penal Code on charges of obstructing public servants, assault, and criminal intimidation.
An investigation is underway based on CCTV footage and witness testimony. Akhtaruzzaman has a history of controversy, having been expelled from his former political party, BNP, a total of five times for breaching party discipline.
Relevant officials view this recent incident of obstructing government duties and assault at the airport as a fresh manifestation of his disorderly and controversial conduct.
