A Dhaka court on Friday afternoon sent 15 accused individuals to jail upon completion of their remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over cake-cutting, anti-state activities, and preparations for sabotage while celebrating the 80th birthday of Sheikh Hasina in the capital’s Uttara area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir passed the order following an application by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain of Uttara West Police Station, who produced the accused before the court after their remand ended.
Earlier on Tuesday, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah had granted a three-day remand for 14 accused and a one-day remand for the remaining female accused.
The accused are Md Yakub Hossain Rajib, 26, Arafat Mia, 22, Rifat Howlader, 19, Hridoy Hasan, 21, Fahim, 19, Rajib Hossain Rana, 24, Md Firoz, 26, Md Arif, 28, Md Omar Faruk, 21, Abdullah Al Aman, 19, Md Abdullah Al Noman, 21, Md Sohanur Hossain Shaheen, 22, Md Hasib, 19, and Md Hasib Mia, 23, alongside the female accused Farzana, 21.
Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin confirmed the matter, saying that the court rejected a bail application submitted on that day by advocate Md Kamal Hossain on behalf of 11 accused persons.
In the application seeking their detention in jail, the investigating officer said the accused confessed to the truth of the incident during interrogation on remand and provided important information.
The application further added that an extensive investigation into the case is ongoing, making it necessary to keep them detained in jail until information verification and the investigation are completed.
Earlier on Monday afternoon, based on secret information, police conducted an operation at the residence of former MP Showkat Hasanur Rahman Rimon – from Barguna-2 constituency of the activity-banned Awami League – located on Road 20, Sector 7 under Uttara West Police Station, and detained them.
On that day, police said during the raid, 20 pages containing the names and curriculum vitae of 20 post-aspirants for Kakchira Union Committee of Barguna’s Patharghata Upazila Swechasebak League were recovered from a table drawer in a room.
Police claimed that the recovered documents bore the logos of Awami League and Swechasebak League, photos of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the inscription “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu,” following which a case was filed at Uttara West Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
When producing the accused in court on that day, police had submitted a seven-day remand application to unearth the mystery of the case, identify the principal perpetrators and leaders, gather information on financial patrons, and arrest the absconding suspects.
