Veteran Bengali singer-songwriter Nachiketa Chakraborty has sparked widespread discussion after posting a sharp and emotional message on social media, apparently responding to rumours about his death that circulated while he was hospitalised.

According to Indian media reports, the 61-year-old protest singer was recently admitted to hospital following a heart attack. Doctors later confirmed that his condition had improved, bringing relief to fans. However, soon after his recovery, Nachiketa shared a video message and a lengthy Facebook post that reignited public attention.

In the post, he wrote, “Death is a great escape,” before reflecting on several life-threatening experiences he has survived over the years. He recalled falling into a coma after a bike accident at 15, narrowly escaping a police bullet at 20, surviving a near-drowning at 16, and undergoing risky surgery at 47. He also mentioned surviving a heart attack earlier this year.

Nachiketa expressed anger over repeated false reports of his death on social media. In a sharply worded passage, he wrote that if people continued to announce his death, he would “try to die”, a line widely interpreted as bitter sarcasm aimed at online sensationalism rather than a literal statement.

Sources close to the singer suggest the post reflects his frustration and disappointment at seeing rumours of his death spread while he was fighting for recovery. Despite the controversy, Nachiketa remains an influential figure in Bengali music, known since the 1990s for songs that confront social injustice, political hypocrisy and everyday struggles.

Even today, his music and public statements continue to resonate strongly with audiences, reinforcing his status not just as a musician but as a voice of social conscience for generations.
