Hollywood pop star and actress Jennifer Lopez has said that heartbreak teaches the biggest lessons in life. She described her journey through love, marriage and separation as a continuous rollercoaster shaped by breakups and fresh starts.
Lopez said she has experienced four broken marriages but never felt broken herself. She views breakups and separations as major life achievements and new chances for a fresh beginning. She added that people should not feel sad after a relationship ends and should instead celebrate the moment, even by hosting a party.
Her comments came during the promotion of her new romantic comedy film Office Romance, which has recently been released. She appeared on Egyptian comedian and artist Karim Rahma’s show Subway Takes, where she discussed love, career and personal breakups.
Lopez married Ojani Noa in 1997, but the marriage lasted less than a year. She later married Chris Judd and then singer Marc Anthony. She has twin children, Max and Emme, now 18 years old, from her marriage to Marc Anthony.
After her divorce, she got engaged to Alex Rodriguez in 2019. They split in 2021 before marriage. In the same year, she reunited with former partner Ben Affleck and married him in 2022. However, the marriage ended and they officially divorced in 2024.
The actress said people often turn inward after heartbreak. She said they question what went wrong, what they should do next and how they could improve. She believes this reflection drives personal change.
Lopez also said society often views breakups and divorce in a negative way, but she disagrees. She said people should celebrate breakups and congratulate each other. She added that a breakup means a decision has been made and it often brings the best outcome for everyone involved.
She further said life’s biggest lessons come after setbacks. She explained that her greatest emotional, psychological and personal growth came after heartbreak. She added that this applies not only to romantic relationships but also to career failures and work setbacks.
