Armed assailants attacked a newly‑established joint forces camp in Jungle Salimpur of Chattogram early Sunday.
The assault began around 1am, RAB‑7 Commander Lt Col Hafizur Rahman said. Members of the ‘Yasin Group’ opened fire, triggering a two‑hour gunfight with the joint forces, he added.
Reinforcements from the army, RAB, and police quickly launched an operation, encircling the entire Jungle Salimpur area by 3am.
RAB later confirmed the situation was under control. No casualties have been reported so far.
According to RAB, the attackers blocked the road and opened fire on the newly‑established camp. Later the joint forces launched the counter‑operation.
To control the situation, non‑lethal weapons were used, and additional personnel were deployed, said Lt Col Hafizur.
Entry into Jungle Salimpur requires taking hilly tracks off the Bayezid–Faujdarhat connecting road in Chattogram. The area, beginning opposite the Asian University for Women, is divided into Jungle Salimpur and Alinagar.
According to district records, about 3,100 acres of khas land lie there, long dominated by land grabbers and armed groups.
On 9 March, law enforcemers finally took control of the zone through a massive joint operation involving 3,200 members of the army, RAB, police, and Border Guard Bangladesh. Previous attempts had failed, with police and officials coming under attack.
Though many militants fled after the March raid, several leaders remain at large, including “Yasin Group” chief Md Yasin, “Rokon Group” leader Rokon Uddin, and associates Mashiur Rahman, Nurul Haque Bhandari, Gazi Sadeq, and Golam Gafur.
Before the operation, Rokon controlled the slum areas of Jungle Salimpur, while Yasin’s influence extended over Alinagar. To strengthen security, RAB and police later set up two temporary outposts at SM Pilot High School in Jungle Salimpur and Alinagar High School.
