Season 4 of ‘The White Lotus’ found its French setting in an unexpectedly spontaneous moment during a visit to Cannes, according to the show’s producers.
Producer David Bernad revealed that the decision to film in France was influenced by an encounter at a restaurant in Cannes, which he described as unexpectedly aligned with the tone and themes of the series. The experience, involving a waiter interaction, helped crystallise the creative direction for the new season.
The production team subsequently shifted plans and committed to France as the primary location. The setting ties into creator Mike White’s vision for the season, which reportedly focuses on the world of art, fame and creative ambition.
Bernad said the new season explores the emotional pressures of artistic life, including isolation, recognition and the influence of fame on personal relationships. He added that the narrative examines who gains attention and why, alongside the personal cost of success.
Filming is taking place across multiple French locations including Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Monaco and Paris, with production using a mix of luxury hotels and city backdrops. The shoot will continue through the summer, with key sequences expected during the Cannes Film Festival period.
The cast includes a wide ensemble of international actors such as Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Alexander Ludwig, alongside French performers including Vincent Cassel and Nadia Tereszkiewicz. Production changes have also been reported, including a recasting after an earlier cast member exited the project.
Season 4 is expected to continue the series’ tradition of blending satire with character-driven drama, this time through the lens of the European art world.
