Tom Cruise believes artificial intelligence will reshape filmmaking, but he remains convinced that audiences will continue to seek authenticity on screen.
Speaking at a BAFTA Life in Pictures event in London on Monday, the Hollywood star reflected on his four-decade career and discussed how emerging technology could affect cinema.
Asked about AI’s growing role in filmmaking, Cruise said, “There is nothing like human.”
The actor said cinema still offers audiences a shared experience, particularly when films are watched in theatres. He urged filmmakers to continue making movies despite the changes technology may bring.
“I always believe in humanity,” Cruise said.
Acknowledging that AI will become increasingly important in the industry, he added, “You know, it is coming and it’s going to happen. But people want to see real things.”
Cruise also discussed his upcoming film ‘Digger’, directed by Alejandro G Iñárritu. He plays a wealthy oil tycoon in the film and revealed that transforming into the character required prosthetics and a fat suit, with the process taking around six hours.
“I’ve never read a movie like this,” Cruise said, describing ‘Digger’ as “the most original film” and “one of the most moving films” he has ever encountered.
