Three people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a battery-run auto-rickshaw and a truck carrying fish containers in Gazipur’s Dhirasram area on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Mohiuddin, 42, son of Abul Kashem of Hyderabad area in Gazipur city; Jamal Hossain, 44, son of Abdul Malek of the same area; and an unidentified man, aged around 60 years old.
According to police, the passenger-carrying auto-rickshaw collided head-on with the truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction on the Joydebpur-Tongi-Banomala Road around 3:30pm, leaving three passengers dead on the spot and injuring three others.
Local residents rescued the injured and took them to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. One of them was in critical condition and was receiving intensive treatment, police said.
Police seized both vehicles from the scene and detained the truck driver.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and whether the truck driver was negligent, said police.
The accident caused traffic to move slowly along the Joydebpur-Tongi-Banomala Road for some time.
Police later removed the damaged vehicles from the road and restored normal traffic.
Mohammad Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gazipur Sadar Metro Police Station, confirmed the deaths and said the three injured people had been taken to hospital.
He said one of the injured was in critical condition.
