Chattogram’s Boalkhali upazila saw five residential houses reduced to ashes in a fire caused by an electrical short circuit. Victims claimed the damage amounted to around Tk 10 lakh.
The incident occurred at around 5am on Tuesday at the house of Jabbar’s family in the eastern Syed Nagar area under Ward No 6 of Charandwip union.
The fire completely destroyed the homes of Jahir Ahmed, Md Idris, Md Nasir, Jasim Uddin and Md Rashed.
Affected families said they were asleep when the fire broke out suddenly and spread rapidly. They could not save any belongings as the blaze engulfed the houses within moments.
On information, two units of Boalkhali Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after around three hours of efforts at about 8am.
Boalkhali Fire Service Station Inspector Alok Chakma said one semi-pucca and four tin-shed houses were burnt in the fire. He added that preliminary findings suggest the fire originated from an electrical short circuit.
