Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday to move top of the Premier League.
Bruno Guimaraes scored a stunning first goal for Arsenal shortly after David Raya saved a penalty. Bukayo Saka then scored from the spot in stoppage time to seal the win. Arsenal had chances in the first half but could not find a breakthrough.
Saka missed an early opportunity after Declan Rice found him with a ball over the top. Kai Havertz also went close, but Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs kept the visitors out.
Sunderland then received a big chance to take the lead in the second half. Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Dan Ballard inside the box. Enzo Le Fee stepped up to take the penalty in the 56th minute.
Raya guessed correctly and pushed the low effort onto the post. Arsenal punished Sunderland just two minutes later.
Guimaraes collected the ball outside the box and produced a superb strike. His shot went in off the underside of the crossbar to give Arsenal the lead.
It was the Brazilian midfielder’s first goal for Arsenal. The former Newcastle captain had also received boos from the Sunderland supporters throughout the game because of his past with their rivals.
Sunderland pushed for an equaliser late in the match. Raya made another important save to deny Nordi Mukiele from close range. Arsenal finally made the result safe deep into stoppage time.
Reinildo Mandava brought down Saka and received his second yellow card. Arsenal were awarded a penalty and Saka converted it to complete the 2-0 win.
The victory was Arsenal’s fourth straight Premier League win and sixth consecutive victory in all competitions. The result also moved Mikel Arteta’s side three points above Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
