A cocktail exploded outside the main gate of the Supreme Court (SC) in Dhaka shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced seven top leaders, including former Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.

The explosion took place at around 1:20pm on Tuesday just outside the Supreme Court’s main gate.

The identities of those behind the blast could not be immediately confirmed.

Sources at the Supreme Court said security was tightened around the main gate and adjoining areas following the incident.

The blast occurred shortly after International Crimes Tribunal-2 handed down death sentences to seven accused members of the Awami League and its affiliated and associate organisations, whose activities have been banned.
