Youth beaten to death on theft suspicion in Maheshkhali

A young man was allegedly beaten to death after being tied to an electricity pole on suspicion of theft in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Faisal, 26.

The incident occurred in East Fakiraghona of Boramoheshkhali Union in the upazila.

A video allegedly showing the assault has since gone viral on social media. In the footage, Faisal is seen tied to an electricity pole as several youths allegedly beat him and hit his back with bricks.

He reportedly died during the beating.

Enayet Ullah Babul, chairman of Boramoheshkhali Union Parishad, said Faisal was detained on suspicion of theft late Monday night.

“He was later tied to an electricity pole and beaten. He was beaten again on Tuesday morning. At one point, he died,” he said.

Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdus Soltan said police recovered the body after receiving information about the incident.

“The body has been sent to the morgue of Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The incident is being investigated, and legal action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.

Local residents have demanded that those involved in the alleged assault be identified and brought to justice.
