The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has rescued 10 Bangladeshi nationals after a dinghy boat capsized in the Padma River in Narayanpur Union under Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila.
The incident occurred at around 5:30pm on Saturday.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said efforts were underway to bring the rescued individuals back to Bangladesh by night.
According to Narayanpur Union Parishad Chairman Md Nazir Hossain, 11 people were travelling in a dinghy boat from Bakharali Ghat in Sadar Upazila towards Jaharpur Camp and Ward No 8 of the union when the boat sank.
Following the capsize, one person managed to swim to safety, while the other 10 were swept into Indian territory.
Members of the BSF’s Khandaha camp later rescued the 10 people. The passengers reportedly included men, women and children.
Chairman Hossain said he had learnt that the rescued Bangladeshis were in the custody of the BSF.
Confirming the rescue, Chapainawabganj Battalion (53 BGB) Commanding Officer Lt Col Kazi Mustafizur Rahman said BSF personnel from the Khandaha camp had rescued 10 people after the boat capsized.
He said BGB had established contact with the BSF and efforts were underway to bring the rescued individuals back to Bangladesh by night.
