Britney Spears has been charged in California following her arrest last month for allegedly driving under the influence.
Prosecutors in Ventura County have filed a misdemeanor count, stating that the singer was stopped on 4 March on a southern California highway after reportedly driving at high speed in an erratic manner. Authorities said no crash or injuries were involved.
The 44-year-old later checked herself into a rehabilitation facility. Her representatives described the incident as “completely inexcusable” and said she intends to comply with legal procedures.
Her arraignment is scheduled for next Monday morning, although she is not required to appear in person due to the minor nature of the charge. Officials noted that such cases often result in probation, fines and mandatory completion of a driving under the influence education programme, with the possibility of a reduced charge.
Spears, one of the most successful pop artists of her generation, is known for hits including ‘…Baby One More Time’, ‘Toxic’ and ‘Womanizer’. She was previously under a conservatorship for 13 years, which ended in 2021.
Representatives added that she is expected to take steps towards recovery, with support from her family during this period.
