While we are living with smartwatches defined by bright OLED displays, daily charging routines, and ecosystems, LightInk has introduced a new type of smartwatch which, it claims, is designed with energy efficiency in mind.
Daniel Ansorregui, an engineer and the developer, has created this as an open-source project which blends retro inspiration with modern embedded systems design. Its philosophy brings back the solar-powered digital watches of the 1990s that seemed to run indefinitely while incorporating technologies such as wireless connectivity and low-power microcontrollers.
The watch is based on an ESP32 system, a compact and widely used microcontroller known for its balance of performance and energy efficiency. This chip is engineered for low-power operation, which enables aggressive sleep states and rapid wake cycles.
The display is on another level as well. Unlike traditional smartwatches, the LightInk has a 1.54-inch monochrome e-paper panel similarly found in phones such as the Minimal phone and the A9 by Hisense. E-ink is effective in power consumption as it uses power only when updating the image, allowing the screen to retain information without continuous energy draw.
It is said that the power consumption of the LightInk is roughly 0.5mAh per day under typical conditions. This translates to around 40 days of continuous usage before the battery runs out. Alongside, a secondary version will be released that will feature a 100mAh battery, which will have lifespans of up to 9 or 11 months (under refined power management). In the case of charging the smartwatch, it will emphasise solar charging rather than traditional charging methods.
The open-source project will have files, firmware, and documentation for enthusiasts to explore and build upon. It is more like a Linux version of smartwatches.
Minimalism and power efficiency are the main focus of the LightInk. With the availability of open-source projects, this is going to be a game-changer with the watch operating based on the users’ habits and needs.
