Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Thursday issued a series of directives urging energy conservation across the country, citing concerns over potential disruptions to the global fuel supply due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The ministry noted that uncertainty in international energy supply has necessitated precautionary measures to ensure national energy security and the efficient use of energy resources.
In a statement, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division requested government institutions, autonomous bodies, private organisations, commercial establishments, and citizens to immediately adopt energy-saving measures.
Regarding natural gas, the directives instructed consumers to follow efficient practices in cooking and other uses to ensure maximum conservation.
Users were urged to avoid the unnecessary use of gas-powered appliances and to regularly check pipelines and burners to prevent leakage and wastage. The public has also been requested to refrain from the illegal use of gas.
To curb fuel consumption, the government encouraged the use of public transport instead of private vehicles and suggested adopting car-pooling where possible. The directives further advised the public to limit unnecessary travel to reduce fuel use.
As part of institutional measures, all government offices and institutions have been asked to ensure energy conservation both during and after office hours. Commercial establishments were also requested to adopt energy-efficient practices and avoid the excessive use of fuel.
A press release from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources urged all stakeholders to take the necessary steps to implement these directives and increase public awareness. “Ensuring national energy security requires cooperation from all,” the ministry stated.
