A writ petition has been filed in the High Court Division challenging the validity of a circular issued reducing the security of Supreme Court judges, the attorney general, and relevant personnel of the judiciary.
Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir filed the petition on Sunday on behalf of 10 lawyers and law students.
The petitioners are lawyers Mohammad Saddam Hossen, Abdullah Sadiq, Md Mizanul Haque, Jaiad Bin Amjad, Mohammad Shahnewaz, Sabbir Rahman, and Mahmudul Hasan.
Also together with Dhaka University law students Shamim Shahidi, Md Rafiul Sabbir, and Habibur Rahman Al Hasan.
Senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs has been named as a respondent in the application, which demands the cancellation of the circular issued on 27 August 2026.
The petitioners said the circular conflicts with the existing Warrant of Precedence and the Appellate Division’s judgment in the case of Bangladesh v. Ataur Rahman and Others.
The writ highlights that issuing a new circular despite the court’s prior directions has undermined the security and dignity of the judiciary.
It contends that the circular breaches the independence of the judiciary, separation of powers, and basic structure of the Constitution.
The application seeks a stay on the operation of the circular, a declaration that it is without lawful authority and of no legal effect, and a direction to reinstate the previous security arrangements.
Earlier, when a similar circular was issued on 2 March 2025, the High Court Division stayed its operation on 6 March 2025.
High Court Division directed authorities to ensure the security of Supreme Court judges, the attorney general, the additional attorney general, and related judicial officials. That circular was subsequently cancelled on 9 March.
