US President Donald Trump has acknowledged the Democrats’ performance following the Republican Party’s setbacks in the midterm elections, saying they had “done a good job”.

Speaking to Fox News host Bret Baier by phone, Trump discussed the election results and admitted he was somewhat surprised by the outcome.

He said there had been a particular “mood in the air” despite the large crowds attending his campaign rallies.

“We had tremendous rallies. I’m a little bit surprised,” Trump said.

Adopting a conciliatory tone, the president added that there were several issues on which he could work with Democrats in Congress.

However, he ruled out making any changes to his Cabinet in response to the midterm election results.
