The High Court has issued a rule seeking an explanation as to why necessary steps should not be taken to stop illegal and unplanned sand extraction from the Padma river and protect its natural flow, ecological balance and nearby infrastructure, including the Padma Bridge.
A bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice SM Iftikhar Uddin Mahmud issued the rule on Wednesday after hearing a writ petition filed by lawyer Md Golam Rahman Bhuiyan.
The petition also sought measures to prevent river erosion and ensure the safety of the Padma Bridge and surrounding infrastructure.
Golam Rahman Bhuiyan confirmed the development.
The writ petition stated that illegal and unplanned sand extraction is causing serious damage to the river’s natural flow, the stability of its banks, the environment and biodiversity.
It also raised concerns over the potential risks to the Padma Bridge, a major national infrastructure project.
Speaking about the petition, Golam Rahman Bhuiyan said the Padma river is closely linked to the country’s economy, environment, agriculture, fisheries and people’s livelihoods.
He said any disruption to the river’s natural flow and ecological balance could threaten the livelihoods of riverside communities, agricultural land and natural resources.
