Garment workers clashed with police again in the Signboard area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur on Wednesday morning.
The clash broke out around 9:30am, triggering tension in the area.
During a series of chases and counter-chases between police and workers, law enforcers fired tear gas shells and sound grenades. Traffic movement on the highway came to a halt, causing congestion on both sides.
Mohammad Amzad Hossain, superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, said between 2,000 and 4,000 workers took to the streets in the morning. Police later engaged in chases and counter-chases with the workers and fired tear gas shells to disperse them from the highway.
He said workers had also gathered in the Joydebpur area around 8:30am but were later dispersed.
The situation remained normal in the Salna, Rajendrapur, Safipur and Polli Bidyut areas. However, law enforcement agencies remained on alert in Kashimpur amid lingering tension there.
