Adani Power Limited’s Unit‑2 was successfully lit up at 5:17am BST on Sunday, ahead of schedule, with power supply projected to resume soon. Official data shows the plant’s unit 1 is currently generating 730.42MW of electricity, while the unit 2 is generating 722.99MW.
The second unit had gone offline around midnight Thursday following a boiler fault, cutting output from the 1,600MW plant in Jharkhand and worsening Bangladesh’s electricity shortages. The shutdown came just as the plant had begun ramping up generation after weeks of reduced output caused by coal transport disruptions.
Generation from Godda had crossed 1,400MW Thursday night before the unit tripped, according to Power Grid Bangladesh data. Supply then fell below 750MW. Officials at the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) confirmed the outage and said repairs would take several days.
The restoration of Unit‑2 comes at a critical time for Bangladesh’s power system, already under strain from shortages of gas, coal and liquid fuel.
Load shedding exceeded 2,500MW during the evening peak on Friday and is expected to rise further if supply remains constrained.
The Godda plant had been operating at reduced capacity since mid‑August due to railway congestion, loading restrictions and heavy rainfall affecting coal supplies. Output had gradually improved towards the end of last month, reaching 900MW in daytime and up to 1,200MW in the evening.
Latest generation figures show PDB producing about 5,000MW from gas‑fired plants, 4,500MW from coal and 2,000–3,000MW from liquid fuel. Overall generation has remained between 13,000MW and 14,000MW against demand exceeding 16,000MW, leaving a significant shortfall.
Located at Godda in Indian state of Jharkhand, the Adani facility comprises two 800 MW units with a combined capacity of 1,600 MW. Bangladesh signed a power purchase agreement with Adani in 2017 to import electricity from the plant, which has previously supplied over 1,500 MW when requested.
