A 20-day-old infant, Tanisha, was among 10 Bangladeshis rescued by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) after a trawler capsized in the Padma River on Saturday evening.
Tanisha is the daughter of Md Sohel and Tania Khatun from Jahurpurtek village in Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila.
Tanisha survived after her mother, Tania, held onto her tightly in the turbulent waters before they were swept into Indian territorial waters.
The incident occurred around 5pm on Saturday evening when a boat carrying 12 passengers sank mid‑river after leaving Alimnagar Ghat in Bakherali for Jahurpurtek village.
Tania risked her life to hold her newborn child firmly in the water to save her from death, keeping her alive.
Following the capsize, BSF personnel rescued 10 Bangladeshis, including Tanisha and her mother, after they floated into Indian territory.
Shyamlal Mandal, a resident of the Taranagar area under Lalgola Police Station in Murshidabad district, witnessed the rescue from the Indian side.
He said on Saturday night that BSF personnel brought the Bangladeshis to the riverbank. Tanisha was unresponsive at the time, so BSF members quickly took her to a local medical centre, where doctors examined her and confirmed that she was healthy.
Commanding Officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 53 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mustafizur Rahman, confirmed the matter.
Tanisha and the other Bangladeshis have returned home safely and in good health, he said.
