The banking sector recorded an aggregate capital shortfall of approximately Tk2.78 lakh crore as of 31 December 2025, a challenge recently discussed at a capital market stakeholders meet in Dhaka.
Participants discussed how the sector could gradually overcome these constraints, strengthen capital positions and restore its capacity to support business expansion and broader economic activity, said a press release on Sunday.
Speakers noted that stronger private-sector and industrial investment will be important for sustaining economic growth in the coming years.
In this process, banks, financial institutions and the capital market will all have an important role in mobilising and channelling funds to productive sectors of the economy.
In this context, strengthening the capital base of banks remains important to enhance their ability to support businesses and broader economic activity.
