Bangladesh Bank has completed the registration and handed over 268 decimals out of 373 decimals of land belonging to the defunct Pioneer Bank in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria, which were sold at an auction, to 11 buyers.
The remaining 105 decimals of land were not handed over as a lawsuit regarding the property remains pending. The land registration and handover activities were completed through a commission at the head office of Bangladesh Bank on Sunday.
The entire process was conducted on the basis of a High Court directive issued on 7 September.
The 373 decimals of land, situated in Kheora mouza under Kasba upazila, were sold to the highest bidders in a public auction on 31 January. A joint district and sessions judge appointed by the Supreme Court conducted the auction.
However, following the auction, the handover process for the entire property was stalled due to a lawsuit filed by several individuals concerning 105 decimals of the land. In its statement, Bangladesh Bank described the litigants as illegal occupants.
Later, an application was filed with the High Court seeking permission to register the 268 decimals of land outside the lawsuit in the names of the buyers. On 7 September, the court ordered the completion of the registration of that land.
Bangladesh Bank mentioned that on 26 July 1977, the High Court appointed the central bank as the official liquidator to settle the assets of 17 defunct banks.
Subsequently, under Clause 7 of the directive dated 4 August 1978, the liquidator was tasked with land sales, fund management, and conducting related activities.
The governor of Bangladesh Bank was present as the chief guest, while two deputy governors attended as special guests at the land handover ceremony on Sunday.
