Sushmita Khatun, captain of the Meherpur district women’s football team, has died while undergoing treatment, nearly a month after a suicide attempt. She was a tenth-grade student at Meherpur Government Girls’ High School.
According to UNB, doctors stated that complications in her kidneys caused by an overdose of sleeping pills ultimately led to her death. She passed away on Monday evening at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Family members said Sushmita had attempted suicide about a month ago by consuming sleeping pills. In critical condition, she was initially admitted to Meherpur 250-bed General Hospital and later transferred to Jashore General Hospital. As her condition failed to improve despite prolonged treatment, she was moved to DMCH, where she eventually died. The reason behind her suicide attempt remains unknown, reports UNB.
Sushmita was the granddaughter of freedom fighter Abdus Salam from Harirampur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila. Apart from football, she had also earned district-level championships in cricket and badminton.
Her untimely death has cast a pall of grief over Harirampur village, Meherpur Government Girls’ High School, and the district’s sporting community.
