Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu on Thursday said implementation of the Teesta master plan would begin in the next fiscal year once the technical study is completed.
He said the project would improve the livelihoods of around 20 million people living on both banks of the river.
The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the new building of Rajarhat Upazila administration in Kurigram at around 11:30am.
Dulu said the state machinery had been weakened during what he described as 17 years of fascist rule, leaving irregularities and corruption in different sectors as well as problems in law and order.
“We are working on these issues,” he said.
He also stressed the need for public cooperation alongside law enforcement agencies to improve the law and order situation.
“If the people and the administration work together, the law and order situation will improve further,” he said.
On employment in Kurigram, the minister said various projects had been undertaken to create jobs for people in a district where the BNP had not won a parliamentary seat.
He said implementation of those projects would create employment opportunities and help build public confidence in the government.
Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Annapurna Debnath, Zila Parishad Administrator Sohel Hosnain Kaykobad, Superintendent of Police Khandakar Fazle Rabbi, district BNP convener Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, joint convener Hasibur Rahman and other district- and upazila-level leaders attended the programme.
