Police in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna on Wednesday afternoon detained a 17-year-old schoolboy on charges of celebrating the birthday and bringing out a procession for ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The detention of the student directly from the school premises has created a stir in the area.

The detainee, Robin Biswas, is a Class 10 student and an examinee for this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations at Bil Gazna School and College. He is from Badai village under Raninagar Union.

Police from Aminpur Police Station detained Robin at around 4:15pm on Wednesday from Bil Gazna School and College, located in Raninagar Union under Sujanagar upazila.

According to police, local residents, and teachers, Robin celebrated the birthday of ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina a few days ago and promoted the event on Facebook.

Following the incident, local leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) entered the school to drag Robin out.

However, teachers at the school resisted, requested them to leave, and escorted the BNP activists out of the school premises.

Later, police from Aminpur Police Station arrived at the institution and detained Robin after class hours ended.

Confirming the incident, Aminpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir said that Robin himself had promoted the celebration of Sheikh Hasina’s birthday on Facebook.

The OC added that Robin was detained based on sufficient evidence and subsequently sent to jail.
