A Bangladeshi expatriate, Md Omar Faruk, 30, who returned home from Saudi Arabia after more than six years, fell victim to a mugging in Dhaka shortly after arriving in the country.
Omar landed in Dhaka at 11pm on Saturday and spent the night at the airport. At dawn, he set off for his home in Keraniganj accompanied by his father and relatives.
At around 5:06am on Saturday, four to five men arriving in a HiAce vehicle intercepted their car in Zia Uddan area after identifying themselves as members of law enforcement agencies.
Under the pretext of conducting a search, the perpetrators took 4,700 Saudi Riyals and 88 grams of gold jewellery from Omar. They also issued threats before fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, Omar lodged a written complaint with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Police said a formal case would be registered upon verifying the authenticity of the incident through CCTV footage. Details regarding the victim were also supported by his cousin, Suleman Akash from Keraniganj.
