Police arrested 764 people across districts under the Chattogram Range in a 24-hour drive against juvenile gangs, mugging, extortion, terrorism and narcotics.

During the same period, 347 people were detained in separate operations targeting juvenile gangs.

The drives were conducted from Sunday morning, 4 October, to Monday morning, according to a press release issued by the Chattogram Range Police Office on Monday afternoon.

Police said that of the 764 people arrested, 85 were held in regular cases, 65 in previous cases, 43 under Section 34 of the Police Act, seven under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and 80 under Section 151 and other legal provisions.

Another 107 people were arrested on warrants, while 20 were held on conviction warrants.

Police arrested 146 people in anti-narcotics operations.

Of them, 82 were arrested in narcotics cases, including one drug carrier and 81 drug users, while 64 alleged drug dealers were arrested in regular and other cases.

A total of 43 cases were filed during the drives.

Police seized 17,660 yaba tablets, 22.743kg of cannabis, one litre of country liquor, 13 bottles of foreign liquor, 12 cans of beer and one bottle of Phensedyl.

Separately, mobile courts sentenced 29 people to imprisonment and collected Tk9,600 in fines.

Police also arrested 10 people in drives against members of banned organisations.

Of them, two were arrested in Chattogram, five in Cumilla and one each in Chandpur, Noakhali and Lakshmipur.

Of the 347 people detained in anti-juvenile gang operations, 275 were released into the custody of their guardians after submitting written undertakings.

Legal action was taken against the remaining 72.

By district, 85 people were detained in Chattogram, 37 in Cox’s Bazar, five in Cumilla, 24 in Brahmanbaria, 15 in Chandpur, 20 in Noakhali, 28 in Feni, 106 in Lakshmipur, four in Rangamati and 23 in Khagrachhari.

Chattogram Range Police said similar drives against juvenile gangs, mugging, extortion, terrorism, narcotics and other criminal activities would continue.
