A Dhaka court has ordered Dhaka University (DU) Faculty of Social Sciences professor AKM Jamal Uddin to be sent to jail after showing him arrested in a sabotage and Anti-Terrorism Act case involving the banned Chhatra League.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order.

State Counsel Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter. The judiciary’s current listing identifies Jashita Islam as an additional metropolitan magistrate.

According to court sources, police filed an application to show Jamal Uddin, a professor at Dhaka University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, arrested in a case filed with Paltan Model Police Station on 19 May 2025.

In the application, police said members, financiers, advisers and instructors of the banned Chhatra League had gathered in Gulistan, Baitul Mukarram and surrounding areas of the capital on 18 May 2025 to carry out sabotage and destructive activities.

Police said several people were detained during a raid in front of Hotel Imperial, opposite the south gate of Baitul Mukarram, while around 140 to 150 unidentified people fled the scene.

Investigators claimed they had found sufficient evidence against Jamal Uddin during the investigation.

According to the police application, evidence was found of his alleged involvement in accepting membership of the banned organisation, supporting its ideology and activities, criminal conspiracy and attempt.

Police also claimed that social media evidence showed his leadership role in various anti-government rallies and meetings in Dhaka.

Jamal Uddin has been in jail since 11 March after being arrested in another case under the same act.

Police subsequently sought to show him arrested in Paltan Police Station Case No 38.

Following a hearing, the court formally recorded his arrest in the case and ordered him to be sent back to jail.
