A 28-year-old nurse named Tanmoi Mondal has committed suicide by hanging herself inside a bathroom at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) upon hearing the news of her lover’s death.
She was employed as a nurse at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Institute in Shahbagh, Dhaka.
Her relatives identified her body at the DMCH morgue on Monday.
According to the deceased’s younger sister, Tandra Mondal, their home is located in Oichhar Math village under Agailjhara upazila of Barishal district, and their late father’s name was Bibhut Mondal.
Tanmoi, who was the elder of two sisters, resided in the hostel of Anwer Khan Modern Hospital.
Tandra said for the past year, Tanmoi had been in a romantic relationship with Akash Mitra from Mathbaria in Pirojpur.
Married and residing in South Keraniganj, Dhaka, Akash was experiencing domestic discord and had told Tanmoi, who was aware of his marriage, that he would divorce his wife.
Tandra alleged that Akash had deceived her sister and taken Tk2 lakh from her under various pretexts, money that Tanmoi had borrowed from others.
Recounting the sequence of events, Tandra said Tanmoi phoned her on Sunday afternoon to inform her that Akash had committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Keraniganj, and that his body was at the DMCH morgue.
Upon learning this, Tanmoi had been moving around the DMCH morgue since Sunday afternoon.
On Monday afternoon, the family received news that the police had recovered Tanmoi’s body from a bathroom at DMCH.
Tandra added that her sister loved Akash deeply and was unable to bear his loss, leading the family to suspect she committed suicide in the hospital bathroom for this reason.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said, after receiving information through the hospital campus police in the morning, police recovered the young woman’s hanging body from a DMCH bathroom.
Cut marks were found on her left wrist at the time, and a bag containing a note reading “You are not in this world, I won’t live either” was recovered beside her body.
Relatives identified the body in the afternoon. The police officer said the young woman committed suicide as she was unable to bear the grief of her lover’s death by hanging. The body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Farhad Hossain told journalists that the police are investigating the entire matter, CCTV footage is being scrutinised, and the exact cause will be determined once the autopsy report is received.
He added that CCTV footage showed her walking around inside the hospital alone, and she was seen up to her entry into the bathroom.
