CNG run auto-rickshaw driver Sumon, has confessed in court to raping and murdering Jannatul Tazmin, a seventh-grade schoolgirl, in Lalmai, Comilla, before being sent to Comilla District Jail.
On Saturday at 3:30pm, Sumon was produced before Judge Mominul Haque of Cognizance Court No 6 under the Comilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Court to give a confessional statement under Section 164, where he admitted his guilt.
Comilla Court Inspector Sadequr Rahman confirmed the matter, saying that the judge recorded the confession and the accused was subsequently sent to Comilla District Jail at 7:20pm on Saturday.
According to the police, Sumon picked up Tazmin in his auto-rickshaw from the Paduar Bazar Bishwa Road area last Wednesday night, promising to take her home for a fare of Tk300. Police said he then drove her to a cropland in Lalmai, where he raped and killed her.
Following the murder, Sumon fled to Chattogram with Tazmin’s mobile phone. He was arrested on Friday, and based on information provided by him, police recovered Tazmin’s phone from a jungle in the Bakhrabad area.
Earlier on Thursday morning, Tazmin’s body was recovered from a cropland in Jagatpur village under Perul North Union in Lalmai upazila. She was an irregular seventh-grade student at Farida Bidyayatan High School in Comilla city. Originally hailing from Jessore, she resided with her family in the Racecourse area of Comilla city.
