Late-night attack in Rangunia leaves three family members injured

A group of masked men broke into a house late at night and attacked members of a family. A father, his teenage son, and his elder brother were injured in pellet firing and attacks with sharp weapons.

Two children in the house were not spared either; they were assaulted. Allegations have been raised against the attackers that they looted cash, mobile phones, and gold ornaments following the attack.

The incident took place late on Thursday night at Jamir Ali Talukder Bari in Lusal Baper Tila area of Sarafbhata Union under Rangunia Upazila in Chattogram. The matter came to light on Friday night when police inspected the scene.

The injured persons are Md Golap, 45, his son Md Asif, 14, and his elder brother Mohammad Syed, 55.

Among them, two are undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and the other at Upazila Health Complex. Besides, Golap’s three-year-old child Mohammad and five-year-old Muhammad Rakib were beaten.

The victim family alleged that the attackers were members of a local identified terrorist group. Wearing masks and armed, they entered the house and demanded Tk5 lakh. Failing to get the money, they vandalised the house and attacked the family members.

At one point, besides firing pellets, they hacked three people with sharp weapons, injuring them. Later, they left taking cash, mobile phones, and gold ornaments from the house.

Injured Golap’s wife, Halima Begum, said her husband was hit by pellets in his right hand. A Chinese axe was also used to hack that same hand. Her son Asif’s left wrist was also injured. The family did not inform the police immediately after the incident.

Police said they kept the matter secret out of fear of the attackers. Later, after receiving information through local residents, police inspected the scene.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Rangunia Circle, Belayet Hossain, inspected the scene and said the reason for the attack is not yet clear.

The victim family was asked to file a case; however, they could not come to the police station as they were busy with medical treatment.

Efforts are underway to identify the persons involved in the attack. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Rangunia Police Station, Md Hilal Uddin, said three people were injured with pellets and sharp weapons.

No case was filed in connection with the incident until Saturday afternoon. Legal action will be taken after identifying the persons involved.
