Eighty meritorious students from eight educational institutions in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira received free bicycles on Thursday under an initiative of the Satkhira Zila Parishad.
Satkhira Zila Parishad Administrator and BNP central leader Habibul Islam Habib, a former MP, distributed the bicycles at Kalaroa Government GKMK Pilot High School.
Under the programme, two top-performing students from each class from six to ten at every institution received bicycles, taking the total to 10 bicycles per school.
The programme was presided over by Sudip Biswas, acting head teacher of Kalaroa Pilot High School.
Satkhira Zila Parishad Chief Executive Officer S M Mahfuzur Rahman attended as special guest.
The event was conducted by Sheikh Tamim Azad Marine, former acting head teacher of the pilot school.
Among others present were former Kalaroa upazila BNP general secretary Abdur Rakib Molla, joint secretary Sheikh Abdul Kader Bachchu, former municipal BNP general secretary Sheikh Sharifuzzaman Tuhin, Betrabati High School Head Teacher Sheikh Rashedul Hasan Kamrul, Sonabaria High School Head Teacher Akhtar Asaduzzaman Chandu and upazila Krishak Dal convener Moniruzzaman.
Teachers and students from the eight educational institutions also attended the programme.
Speaking at the event, Habibul Islam Habib said the Satkhira Zila Parishad was implementing projects to provide stipends and bicycles to meritorious and poor students, along with tree-plantation initiatives.
“We are standing beside the students so that they are encouraged to develop their talents,” he said.
He also announced Tk2 lakh for the construction of a bicycle shed at the pilot high school.
