Seven people, including three women and a child, were killed when a bus collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Mymensingh city on Friday afternoon.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The accident occurred around 1:30pm in the East Gandrapa area near Bangladesh Bank on the city’s bypass road, said Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun.
Mohammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said a Dhaka-bound bus of Rajib Paribahan travelling from Jamalpur collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw travelling from Muktagacha towards the Mymensingh bypass, leaving all passengers of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot.
After receiving the news, the OC went to the scene.
A Fire Service team from Bangladesh Agricultural University also joined the rescue operation.
Traffic on the Mymensingh-Muktagacha road remained suspended for about an hour following the accident, causing disruption in the area. Police later reached the scene and brought the situation under control.
The bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The bus driver and helper fled the scene after the crash, police said. Police later seized the bus involved in the accident.
