Voting has commenced for the Sherpur-3 constituency, delayed earlier due to the death of Jamaat’s candidate Nuruzzaman Badol. Polling opened at 7:30am and will continue until 4:30pm.
At 8am on Wednesday, BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel cast his vote at Ruparpara Government Primary School in Sreebardi upazila. He was accompanied by his wife Farida Haque, party leaders, and family members.
Addressing the media, Rubel dismissed claims from Jamaat that BNP agents were being barred from polling stations. “I have visited multiple centres myself. Jamaat’s agents are present at every station, including in my own union. Such allegations are false and intended to confuse the public,” he said.
Rubel added that law enforcement presence is higher than in previous elections, ensuring no disturbances. “Voting is proceeding peacefully, and citizens can exercise their franchise without fear,” he noted.
Jamaat candidate Masudur Rahman also voted at Tatihati Government Primary School at 8:15am. He expressed concerns about alleged irregularities. “Reports indicate that my agents are being removed from several centres. Voters are being pressured to vote for BNP in public, which is deeply regrettable,” he said.
Masudur urged authorities to ensure a free, fair, and secure environment for all voters and called for immediate action to guarantee equal opportunity for all candidates.
The Sherpur-3 constituency covers 17 unions and one municipality across two upazilas. Voting will take place at 128 polling centres and 751 booths, with 413,377 registered voters. Among the centres, 27 are highly significant, 32 are important, and 69 are general.
The contest features Mahmudul Haque Rubel of BNP, Masudur Rahman of Jamaat, and Mizanur Rahman of the Bangladesh Socialist Party (Marxist).
The election had been postponed on 12 February following the death of Jamaat’s original candidate, Nuruzzaman Badol.
