Satkhira’s Himsagar mango hits markets as harvest begins

The much-awaited Himsagar mango, one of Satkhira’s most popular and delicious varieties, officially entered local markets on Friday, as growers began harvesting the fruit in line with the district administration’s mango calendar.

Farmers across Satkhira started plucking the fully ripened Himsagar mangoes from their orchards, marking the start of the variety’s market season, officials said. Wholesale prices of Himsagar mangoes ranged from Tk2,300 to Tk2,400 per maund.

Hafizul Islam Khoka, a mango grower from the Kukrali area of Satkhira town, said a portion of his Himsagar harvest is being exported to the United Kingdom and Italy.

“About four tonnes of Himsagar mangoes from my orchard are being shipped abroad today,” he added. He also mentioned that locally, he is selling the mangoes at Tk3,000 per maund.

Satkhira Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Monir Hossain confirmed that Himsagar mangoes have fully matured and farmers have been permitted to bring them to market starting Friday.

According to the official schedule, Langra mangoes will be harvested from 27 May, while Amrapali mangoes will be ready for marketing from 5 June.

The district’s mango season kicked off on 5 May with Gobindabhog and Gopalbhog varieties, he added.
The Department of Agricultural Extension has set a target of producing 70,900 tonnes of mangoes in Satkhira this season, with plans to export approximately 100 tonnes to international markets.

A visit to Sultanpur market in Satkhira town showed that Himsagar mangoes are being sold at Tk1,500 to Tk2,500 per maund, depending on size.

Vendors noted that although supply is higher compared to last year, demand among buyers is comparatively lower, resulting in slightly reduced prices this season.
