Two people, including a Sierra Leone national, were killed after a covered van hit a motorcycle in Dhaka’s Banani area on Friday night.
The accident took place at around 11:15 pm on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Road near the traffic police box at Amtoli intersection.
The deceased were identified as ride-sharing motorcycle driver Khaled Saifullah, 38, and Michael, 36, a citizen of Sierra Leone.
Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Tarek Hasan confirmed the incident, saying Saifullah was from Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali. His father’s name is Mohammad Rafiq Ullah.
He used to carry passengers on his motorcycle through a ride-sharing service, the police official said.
Michael was a teacher at Canadian International School and lived in Janata Housing area of Mirpur-2, according to police.
The SI said Michael’s visa had expired and he had formally bid farewell to his school on Friday. He was scheduled to return to his home country on Saturday.
Police said Michael was returning home from Tejgaon on a hired motorcycle when a covered van hit the motorcycle from behind near Banani Amtoli and fled the scene.
Both riders died on the spot.
SI Tarek Hasan said the covered van driver fled immediately after the accident. Police are trying to identify the vehicle and arrest the driver.
The bodies have been sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
