National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, has issued a statement strongly condemning the midnight demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre, describing the event as a horrific illustration of the country’s fragile law and order situation.
The Radda MCH-FP Centre, an institution that has been providing healthcare services to expectant mothers and children as well as running vaccination programmes for 50 years, was subjected to night-long vandalism and looting while law enforcement agencies maintained a silent and indifferent stance.
Expressing deep concern, the NCP convener said that a country cannot function in this manner. He added that the demolition and takeover of a hospital in the heart of the capital, reminiscent of land grabbing, has raised public questions over whether a government exists in the country at all.
Meanwhile, local residents have alleged that, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Member of Parliament from a reserved women’s seat Ferdousi Ahmed Misti, and an influential leader of the Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP instigated the vandalism and land capture.
Criticising the authorities, the statement noted that the home minister’s virtual inaction despite the day-by-day deterioration of law and order is a matter of shame for the whole nation.
Demanding swift action, the NCP convener called for the immediate arrest and trial of every individual involved in the vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre.
He further demanded that the key orchestrators behind the incident be identified and brought under the law to ensure exemplary punishment for those found guilty.
